Take that US of A

The US have claimed that China is stalling efforts to get to a third round of UN sanctions against Iran for refusing to give up a country’s right to generate nuclear electricity. The five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany were set to discuss further sanctions against Iran this week in London following the release of a report from the International Atomic Energy Association. The report expressed the transparency of Iran’s nuclear program however some questions remained over Iranian nuclear work. It was reported that China pulled out of the six party talks to ‘digest and analyze’ information gathered during recent talks with Iran but have since agreed to meet in London to discuss the issue of Iran’s nuclear program.

Of the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany involved in talks, China and Russia have aligned by seeking more time for diplomacy while the US, France, Germany and the UK are determined to go ahead with another round of sanctions against Iran. China believes that Iran has the right to produce nuclear energy in a peaceful manner, meanwhile the US and Western allies have asserted their suspicions over Iran’s nuclear program.

Amidst the multilateral talks over the future of Iran’s nuclear ambitions is the modernization of Iran’s air force. Due to Western sanctions and pressure, Iran is looking to China and Russia to bolster its air defences, seeking to replace its obsolete US Jets. Paradoxically by purchasing aircraft from China, Iran may end up with similar technology developed by Israel.

No longer under house arrest

Dozens of police with batons and riot vests stand guard outside the residence of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto. Jail officials have however left the premises after the Pakistani government freed Bhutto from house arrest.

In a supposed step towards a national election, president Pervez Musharraf has appointed a close ally, Mohammadmian Soomro, as caretaker prime minister to oversee general elections. A former banker, Soomro has been rejected by opposition who claim this appointment is part of General Musharraf’s scheme to perpetuate his rule.

8-8-88

In response to a violent crackdown last month by the Burmese government, Canada has announced tougher sanctions to be imposed on the military junta. ‘The strongest message has to be sent. Sanctions are the means by which we, not just Canada, but the international community, can best exert pressures against the military junta,’ said Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier.

In August, a pro-democracy uprising began as a result of the government’s decision to increase the price of fuel. An increase in the cost of staple items has caused pro-democracy activists, the hundred thousand or so monks, and others to march and protest in the streets of Burma.

Peek-a-boo! I see you

An incident involving Chinese and US naval forces has caused some major embarrassment for the Pentagon recently. The incident occurred between Japan and Taiwan as the US conducted naval exercises. During the exercises, a 160ft long Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine surfaced, well within striking range of the suppercarrier, USS Kitty Hawk. The incident occurs as China urges the US to forfeit the sale of arms to Taiwan. The sale, according to Chinese officials, would seriously violate the joint communiqué signed between China and the US in 1982. Taiwan, presently considering a bid to enter the United Nations, may seriously threaten the peace and stability in the region with its attempt at separation. A Show of Good Faith? There has to be a catch

Washington’s decision to free nine Iranians held in Iraq – of the twenty held captive – suggests a pacifying stance between the US and Iran. Tensions have been building over Iran’s nuclear program pitting the West against the East on issues ranging from sanctions to energy contracts. Speaking of energy contracts, some might recall the Washington Post award for ‘oddest geopolitical couple of 2005’: Iran and Halliburton. Of course, Halliburton were not actually breaking any US laws because non-Americans were to be employed by a Cayman Islands subsidiary of Dick’s former employer. Hard to imagine that the popular kids in Washington side step the law while trying feverishly to legitimize the need for stronger economic sanctions against one member of the so-called ‘Axis of Evil’. You’re grounded! … Again!

Barricades and snipers have surrounded the house arrested former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto. The former prime minister has recently returned from exile in the midst of civil unrest in Pakistan.
